Belle Plaine Awarded Disaster Recovery Funding for Downtown Housing

The City of Belle Plaine was recently awarded $390,000 in CDBG Disaster Recovery funding to rehabilitate the upper story of the historic King Theater building in downtown Belle Plaine. The City and the developer, Homeplace Ventures, Inc, intend to preserve as much of the building’s historic character as possible, while updating the upper story to make it decent, safe, and sustainable housing for the community.

The project will result in 4 newly remodeled rental units for income-eligible renters, with priority given to those impacted by the 2020 derecho. Disaster impacts can include property damage, property loss, displacement, loss of business, loss of employment or missed work, economic loss, loss of power, access or commute time to employment/childcare significantly impacted due to disaster, and physical or mental health issues related to disaster. ECICOG wrote and will administer the grant for Belle Plaine. For more information on this project or disaster recovery funding contact ECICOG Housing Grant Specialist Paula Mitchell.
